In my role as Patron of GRACE, as a woman and as a mother of two
daughters, I am committed and dedicated to raising the profile of the gynaecological
cancers, which is sadly, a neglected and desperately under-funded field of medicine.
It is my privilege to support GRACE in raising awareness of the symptoms of these
distressing cancers so that women seek treatment as soon as possible and can be
treated much more successfully using kinder key-hole surgery techniques. In many
cases, this not only saves lives, but also spares younger women the distress of losing
their fertility before they have had the opportunity to start their families.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your families a Merry
Christmas and a very Happy New Year

Thank you

Infroduction
On behalf of our new patron Sarah, the Duchess of York and my fellow Trustees,
welcome to the Trinity Church Cathedral Guildford for this spectacular concert in aid
of GRACE. What will follow is an eclectic mix of entertainment from musical theatre,
opera and circus interspersed with the spoken word and some of our favourite carols
and hymns. This variety reflects the way that cancer cuts through all of our lives,

whatever our background, race, religion, occupation or status.
GRACE was established in 2005 to improve the prognosis and survival rate for women
with gynaecological cancer. GRACE has already started to establish a new centre

of excellence in gynaecological cancer care at St. Luke's in Guildford, supporting a
wide-ranging clinical network across Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire in order to deliver

equity of high quality care to patients and carers alike. So far over £150,000 has
already been raised to:
*

Improve awareness and education within the population and within

primary healthcare to increase early detection of gynaecological cancers
*

Improve clinical services available to patients with provision of state-ofthe-art theatre equipment, the development of minimally invasive and

fertility sparing tfreatments, and Clinical Nurse Specialists in this field
.

Laboratory-based and epidemiological research into ovarian, uterine and

cervical cancer and into patient-centred models of follow-up for women
after cancer treatment, and into the side-effects of freatment on their lives.
Early diagnosis and treatment is vital if we are to reduce the 10,000 lives lost to
gynaecological cancer each year in the UK: ten times the capacity of Guildford

cathedral. The cutting edge of surgical technology is represented by the da Vinci
robofic system which enables the surgeon to offer more precise and comprehensive
minimally invasive surgery for early-stage gynaecological cancers to a much wider
range of patients than otherwise possible due to:

.

Intuitive dexterity of the robot-assisted system

.

Extreme accuracy and precision due to the magnified 3-D image

.

Unparalleled ease of use for complex laparoscopic surgery

Potential benefits to patients include shorter hospital stay and recovery time, with
improved clinical outcomes and reduced side-effects.
This is your opportunity to revolutionise local treatment and help GRACE raise the £1.2
million to obtain the da Vinci robotic system for St. Luke’'s Cancer Centre. This system
would ensure that we continue to offer the very best freatment to thousands more
women and continue to develop $t. Luke’s as a leading centre for gynaecological

cancer care of both national and international repute.
Merry Christmas.

GRACE Consultants
Simon Butler-Manuel
Consultant in Gynaecological Oncology

Clinical Director of the SWSH Cancer Network
Simon was the first Consultant in Gynaecological Oncology to

be appointed to the SWSH Cancer Network and has intfroduced
advanced

minimal

access surgical

techniques to treat the

gynaecological cancers of patients in this area. These techniques

result in a far quicker recovery, less scarring, less morbidity and an
earlier return to normal activities.

Simon has undertaken a great deal of patient centred research
and has a particular interest in side effects and morbidity following
treatment for cancer.

Anil Tailor
Consultant in Gynaecological Oncology

Anil was the second Consultant in Gynaecological Oncology to
be appointed to the SWSH Cancer Network. He has developed
and introduced a comprehensive database that is allowing

detailed data to be collected on cancer patients being treated
in this region. This will eventually enable cancer outcomes to be

monitored closely. It will also facilitate research and improve the
profile of our cancer centre nationally and internationally.

Anil has undertaken extensive research on ovarian cancer
screening and on the use of ultrasound to discriminate benign
from cancerous ovarian disease

Sharadah Essapen

Sharadah is a Consultant Clinical Oncologist with a special
interest in the management of gynaecological malignancies.
She is based at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, where she is a
core member of the gynaecological cancer specialist team at St

Once in Royal David’s City
ALL STAND
SOLO:
Once in royal Davids city,
Stood a lowly cattle shed,

Where a mother laid her Baby,
In a manger for His bed:
Mary was that mother mild,

Jesus Christ, her little Child.
CHOIR ONLY:

He came down to earth from heaven,
Who s God and Lord of all,
And His shelter was a stable,
And His cradle was a stall:

With the poor, and mean, and lowly,
Lived on earth our Saviour holy.

ALL:

For He is our childhood’s pattern;
Day by day, like us, He grew;
He was little, weak, and helpless,
Tears and smiles, like us He knew;
And he feeleth for our sadness
And he shareth in our gladness
ALL:

And our eyes at last shall see Him,
Through His own redeeming love;
For that Child so dear and gentle,
Is our Lord in heaven above:
And He leads His children on,

To the place where He is gone.

The Guildford Philharmonic Choirwas foundedin 1947 by the Borough of Guildford to perform
major works from the choral repertoire with the Guildford Philharmonic Orchestra. During
this time the choir has grown both in stature and reputation and can now rightly claim its
place as one of the foremost choruses in the country. The choir grew to prominence under

Willcocks. Sir David remains in contact with the choir as its President. Jeremy Backhouse
became its Music Director and Conductorin 1996. The Choiris a fully auditioned Choir and
presents a varied repertoire each year.
In May 2005 the Vivace Chorus gave the first concert of its Contemporary Choral Classic
Cycle (4Cs ), aninnovative series of choral concerts comprising works from the 20th and 21st
century - classics of the future paired with established masterpieces. The concert included
Karl Jenkins ‘The Armed Man' in which the Muezzin from the Woking Mosque performed
the Muslim “Call to Prayer’ in Guildford Cathedral. The Vivace Chorus 4C’s concert this year
entitled ".... and all that Jazz' accompanied by Will Todd's jazz band for his ‘Mass in Blue'
and Bob Chilcott’s ‘A Little Jazz Mass', was a resounding success.

Other recent performances have included Dvorak's Requiem and Verdi's Requiem
(Guildford and Freiburg), Mahler's Symphony No. 8, Borodin's Polovtsian Dances and
Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky (both in Russian), Elgar's Dream of Gerontius and The Music

THE GYNAECOLOGICAL CANCERS
Ovarian Cancer
*Is known as the ‘silent killer’ as it is difficult to detect and treat
*Causes over 6,000 deaths each year in the UK

*75% of women diagnosed with ovarian cancer die from the disease
*|s becoming increasingly common in the UK
The symptoms of ovarian cancer may be vague and not specific, and can therefore

be trivialised. The commonest symptoms resemble bowel problems such as IBS (lrritable
Bowel Syndrome) or indigestion, abdominal swelling or a change in bladder symptom:s.
More obvious gynaecological symptoms such as vaginal bleeding or pain on intercourse
may sometimes occur. These symptoms are common to many other conditions but the

development of new abdominal symptoms in a middle-aged lady is always a concern.
Endometrial Cancer (Cancer of the lining of the womb)
*5,000 new cases diagnosed each year in the UK
*Nearly 1,000 deaths each year

*|s becoming increasingly common in the UK
This cancer is most common among post-menopausal women although 20% of cases
present in women of childbearing age. Endometrial cancer typically presents with

abnormal vaginal bleeding and is more common among women taking HRT, and those
with maturity onset diabetes. Hysterectomy is the mainstay of treatment, but minimal
access techniques are increasingly being used to reduce the morbidity of this.
Cervical Cancer
*Causes the death of 1,200 women each year in the UK
*|Is the commonest cancer in women under the age of 35

This cancer is particularly common in young women but fortunately it is becoming
increasingly rare thanks to the success of the UK screening programme. New minimal

access surgical techniques for early stage cancer reduce scarring, side-effects and may,
in certain circumstances, preserve a woman's fertility.

Vulval Cancer
* A very distressing cancer affecting the skin of the external genitalia

These cancers usually present with an itchy or painful skin lesion, wart-like growth or ulcer
on the genital skin. They may cause bleeding or a blood-stained discharge and pain in
the area of the vulva. Current treatment involves surgical removal of lymph nodes in the
groin to ensure the malignancy has not spread. This causes significant morbidity as up to

50% of wounds may break down and delay healing. New equipment will minimise the risk
of these complications.
Vaginal Cancer
Cancer of the vagina is rare with fewer than 300 women diagnosed with it each year

in the UK. The most common symptoms of this cancer are a blood-stained vaginal
discharge, bleeding after sexual intercourse and pain. Problems with passing urine, such
as blood in the urine, the need to pass urine frequently and the need to pass urine at
night, can also occur. Pain in the back passage (rectum) may occur.

All Stand And Sing

Land of Hope and Glory
Choir

Dear Land of Hope, the hope is crowned,
God make thee mightier yet! On Sov’ran brows, beloved, renowned,
Omnce more thy crown is set. Thine equal laws, by Freedom gained,
Have ruled thee well and long; By Freedom gained, by Truth maintained, Thine Country shall be strong.

All(soft) Land of Hope and Glory, Mother of the Free,
How shall we extol thee, who are born of thee?
Wider still, and wider, shall thy bounds be set;
God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet!
Allloud) Land of Hope and Glory, Mother of the Free,
How shall we extol thee, who are born of thee?
Wider still, and wider, shall thy bounds be set;
God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet!
Choir

Thy fame is ancient as the days, As Ocean large and wide;
A pride that dares, and heeds not praise, A stern and silent pride.
Not that false joy that dreams content; With what our sires have won,
The blood a hero sire hath spent, Still nerves a hero son.

All (softy Land of Hope and Glory, Mother of the Free,
How shall we extol thee, who are born of thee?
Wider still, and wider, shall thy bounds be set;
God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet!
All (loud) Land of Hope and Glory, Mother of the Free,
How shall we extol thee, who are born of thee?
Wider still, and wider, shall thy bounds be set;
God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet!

All Stand And Sing

Jerusalem
And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England’s mountains green

And was the holy lamb of God
On England’s pleasant pastures seen

And did the countenance divine

Shine forth upon our clouded hills
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among those dark Satanic mills
Bring me my bow of burning gold

Bring me my arrows of desire
Bring me my spears o’clouds unfold
Bring me my chariot of fire

[ will not cease from mental fight

Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand
“Til we have built Jerusalem
In England’s green and pleasant land
“Til we have built Jerusalem

In England’s green and pleasant land

All Stand And Sing

Hark! the Herald Angels Sing
Hark the herald angels sing
“Glory to the newborn King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled”
Joyful, all ye nations rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With the angelic host proclaim:
“Christ is born in Bethlehem”
Hark! The herald angels sing
“Glory to the newborn King!”

Christ by highest heav’'n adored
Christ the everlasting Lord!
Late in time behold Him come

Offspring of a Virgin’s womb
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see
Hail the incarnate Deity

Pleased as man with man to dwell
Jesus, our Emmanuel
Hark! The herald angels sing
“Glory to the newborn King!”

Hail the heav’n-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings
Ris’n with healing in His wings
Mild He lays His glory by
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth
Hark! The herald angels sing
“Glory to the newborn King!”
