ONCE IN ROYAL DAVID'S CITY
Solo

Once in royal David's city
Stood a lowly cattle shed,
Where a mother laid her baby
In a manger for his bed:

Mary was that mother mild,
Jesus Christ her little child.
Choir

He came down to earth from heaven
Who is God and Lord of all,

And his shelter was a stable,
and his cradle was a stall;
With the poor, and mean, and lowly,
Lived on earth our Saviour holy.
All

And through all his wondrous childhood
He would honour and obey,

Love, and watch the lowly maiden,
In whose gentle arms he lay;
Christian children all must be
Mild, obedient, good as he.

And our eyes at last shall see him,
Through his own redeeming love,
For that Child so dear and gentle
Is our Lord in heaven above;
And he leads his children on

To the place where he is gone.

Not in that poor lowly stable,
With the oxen standing by,
We shall see him; but in heaven,
Set at God's right hand on high;
Where like stars his children crowned
All in white shall wait around.

THE FIRST NOWELL

The first Nowell the Angel did say
was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;
In fields where they lay, keeping their sheep,
On a cold winter's night that was so deep:
Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell,
Bam is the King of Isreel!
They looked up and saw a star,

Shining in the east, beyond them far;
And to the earth it gave great light,
And so it continued both day and night:
And by the light of that same star,
Three wise men came from country far:;

To seek for a king was their intent,
And to follow the star wherever it went:

This star drew nigh to the north-west:

O'er Bethlehem it took its rest,
And there it did both stop and stay
Right over the place where Jesus lay:
Then entered in those wise men three,
Full reverently upon their knee
And offered there in his presence
Their gold and myrrh and frankincense:
Then let us all with one accord
Sing praises to our heavenly Lord,

That hath made heav'n and earth of naught,
And with his blood mankind hath bought:
UNTO US IS BORN A SON

Unto us

is born a Son,

King of quires supernal:

See on earth his life begun,
Of

Lords the Lord eternal.

Christ,

from heav'n descending low,

Comes on earth a stranger:
Ox and ass their owner know,
Becradled in the manger.
Men

This did Herod sore affray,

And grievously bewilder,
So he gave the word to slay,

And slew the
Women

little childer.

Of his love and mercy mild
This the Christmas story;
And O that Mary's gentle child
Might lead us up to glory!

All

O and A,

and A and O,

Cum cantibus in choro,
Let our merry organ ge@,

Benedicamus Domino.
AS WITH GLADNESS MEN OF OLD

As with gladness men of old
Did the guiding star behold,

As with joy they hailed its light,
Leading onward, beaming bright,
So,

most gracious God,

Evermore be

As with joyful
To that

may we

led to thee.
steps they sped

lowly manger-bed,

There to bend the knee before

Him whom heaven and earth adore,

So may we with willing feet
Ever seek thy

mercy-seat.

As they offered gifts most rare
At that manger rude and bare,
So may we with holy joy.,

Pure, and free from sin's alloy,
All our costliest treasures bring,

Christ,

to thee our heavenly King.

In the heav'nly country bright
Need they no created light;
Thou its light, its joy, its crown,
Thou its sun which goes not down:
There for ever may we sing
Alleluyas to our King.
HARK THE HERALD ANGELS SING

Hark! the herald angels sing
Glory to the new-born King;
Peace on earth and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled:
Joyful all ye nations rise,
Join the triumph of the skies,
With the angelic host proclaim,
Christ is born in Bethlehem.
Hark, the herald Angels sing

Glary to the new-born
King.
Christ, by highest heaven adored,
Christ, the everlasting Lord,
Late in time behold him come
Offspring of a virgin's womb:
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see,
Hail the incarnate Deity!
Pleased as man with man to dwell,
Jesus, our Emmanuel.
Hark, the herald Angels sing
Glory to the new-born King.
Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace!

Hail the Sun of Righteousness!
Light and life to all he brings,
Risen with healing in his wings;
Mild he lays his glory by,
Born that man no more may die,
Born to raise the sons of earth,
Born to give them second birth,
Hark! the herald Angels sing
Glory to the new-bom
King.

THE CHORISTERS OF GUILDFORD CATHEDRAL CHOIR

The Choir of Guildford Cathedral was formed in 1961 under Barry Rose,

the Cathedral's first Organist and Choirmaster. Since the Consecration

of the Cathedral, the Choir has maintained a daily Sung Evensong,

as practised in the much older English foundations. The choristers,
numbering nineteen, are all drawn from Lanesborough Preparatory School
in Guildford. Some of the older boys attend the Royal Grammar School.
The lower parts are sung by professional Layclerks and choral scholars
from the University of Surrey.

During its relatively short history, the choir has made numerous recordings,
including an album of Christmas Carols which won a 'Gold Disc' award
for the sale of a million copies. The choir has toured extensively

in Britain and Europe and has performed at many notable venues, including

St John's, Smith Square (London) and Notre Dame in Paris.

The choir covers a large repertoire from plainsong to contemporary

to
music, including a wide variety of European styles. 1In addition orchestra

service music, the choir occasionally performs larger works with
In recent years, these have included Handel's Messiah, Bernstein's
chichester Psalms and Honegger's King David.

ion:
The choir has been directed by three choirmasters since the Consecrat
in 1974 Barry Rose moved to St Paul's Cathedral, London (where he
was responsible for directing the choir at the wedding of the Prince
and Princess of Wales) and was succeeded by Philip Moore (now at York
Minster).

The present choirmaster, Andrew Millington, took up his

appointment in 1983.
