Rehearsal: 2.30-5.30pm.

This programme brings together some of the best choral and orchestral music written by
American composers. A more reflective first half, opened by Copland’s stunning “Fanfare
for the Common Man” includes Barber’s glorious “Adagio for strings”, recognised as a
national anthem at sombre occasions, in the same way that “Nimrod” is played in this
country. The Lauridsen anthem follows the same vein and Stravinsky’s “Symphony of
Psalms” concludes the first half in the most ethereal tones. The second half kicks off in

lighter vein with some of Copland’s “Old American Songs” — great fun! — and after a brief
excursion into Randall Thomson’s “Alleluia”, the evening closes with Bernstein’s brilliantly

ebullient “Chichester Psalms”. Variety is the name of the game —brass fanfares,
