We now have a little bit of the Internet all to ourselves, to do with as we like. To be more technical, we
have a home page on the World-Wide Web: its URL (address) is:
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/rodcuff/gpc.htm
This may or may not mean much to you - but if not, you may have relatives, friends or colleagues for
whom it does, so let them know! I’ve suggested to Kathy that the printed programmes for our concerts
could include the address.
Information about the choir is now available to anyone anywhere in the world who can use the Internet many tens of millions now do. It’s up to us what we want to show them. At the moment they can see:
e
Basic information about the choir, as printed in our concert programmes
e
Full details of our concert season
e
Jeremy Backhouse’s biography
e
How to apply to join us, and what our audition involves.
One of the best things about Web pages is that you can put in “links” to any other Web pages you like.
They may be in Guildford, London, San Francisco or Tierra del Fuego; it’s completely irrelevant, and you
don’t need to know. You just click your mouse on a reference to the link, and the required page appears.
At the moment, our home page links include:
e
Other British choirs on the Internet (very few - we’re ahead of the game in the UK ...)
International choral links (... and not doing too badly worldwide)
Classical music resources in London
Guildford (town, cathedral ...)
Surrey (who have just started the Surrey Web - see your local paper!)
Freiburg
Some of Vernon Handley’s recordings
Some of the composers whose works we’re singing
Rotary International
Anyone reading our page can send e-mail to us (OK, to me!) very easily. Soon there’ll be a running
count of how many people have accessed the page. And I’ll ensure that there are links to us from other
people’s home pages, and from the various Web search engines (huge databases of Web page contents -
asking one of them today for all pages referring to choirs gave 355 documents, for instance).
There are all sorts of things still to add - such as Jeremy’s photo, biographies for Jeremy Filsell and Peter
White (please!), sponsors of our concerts, Friends of the Choir, more on our links with Freiburg, a list of
what we’ve sung in the past few years, details of our planned workshop ... Let me know, by e-mail or
word of mouth, what you’d like to see added, including any (preferably British) choral-related Web pages
you find.
It would be nice to include links to home pages that individual choir members may have, and perhaps a
list of e-mail ids for those choir members who feel comfortable with publishing them. Please send me email if you want me to put a link/id into the home page.
