Vivace Chorus presents its third concert of
Contemporary Choral Classics.
Listen to the influence of jazz music on leading contemporary
composers. Rutter and Chilcott grew up in the classical choral tradition
but also write superb jazz music. In contrast, Will Todd is a jazz
composer who writes wonderful choral music. A fantastic evening of
vibrant music-making is in store - something completely different and
not to be missed. Will Todd now lives in Guildford and will be taking
part in this first major performance of his work in Guildford, and also
giving a pre-concert talk*. Over the past decade, Will has collaborated
with various librettists and his work has been performed to great
critical and audience acclaim in both England and the United States.
Bob Chilcott sang and composed music for the
King’s Singers for 12 years. He is passionately
committed to the belief that music can unite people
worldwide. His Little Jazz Mass for chorus, piano,
string bass and drums is a setting of the Latin Missa
Brevis. It was first performed in New Orleans in 2004.
John Rutter’s orchestration is brilliant, and in his
Gloria he gives us all the bright colours we have come
to expect from him.
Will Todd’s Mass in Blue clearly comes from the jazz
idiom and mixes Blues with Gospel. The soprano solo
reveals a very strong Gospel influence. The whole is a
mixture of driving jazz rhythms and brilliant choral
writing. Will Todd will be at the piano in his band and
Bethany Halliday will be our soloist. She has a major
solo career and sings extensively with ENO.
